As a Lubbock family photographer, one of the most common questions I receive from clients is about what to wear to their family photo sessions. Choosing the right outfits can make a significant difference in the final outcome of your photos. I wanted to share some valuable tips and suggestions to help you select the perfect attire for your upcoming family photo session!

Coordinate Colors, But Avoid Matching

Coordinating colors is essential when planning your family's outfits. Aim for a cohesive and harmonious look without going overboard on matching perfectly. Instead of wearing the exact same color or pattern, consider choosing a color palette that complements each family member's clothing. Select two or three primary colors and mix and match them throughout the outfits. This will create visual interest and prevent everyone from looking too uniform.

Start with a Neutral Foundation

When building your family's outfits, it's often best to start with a neutral foundation. Neutrals, such as white, cream, beige, or gray, serve as a base that can be easily matched with other colors. Neutral tones also provide a timeless and classic look, ensuring your photos won't appear dated years down the road.

Comfort is Key

Above all, prioritize comfort when selecting your family's outfits. If family member, especially kids, are uncomfortable or self-conscious in their clothing, it may reflect in the photos. Choose clothing that allows freedom of movement and makes everyone feel at ease, ensuring genuine smiles and relaxed expressions that truly capture your family's joy and love.

Consider the Location and Season

The location and season of your family photo session can play a role in your outfit choices. For outdoor sessions in Lubbock, Texas, particularly during the warmer months, it's essential to consider the weather. Opt for lightweight and breathable fabrics that will keep your family comfortable while still looking stylish. You can also use the surroundings as inspiration for color choices. For example, if you're planning an outdoor shoot in the beautiful Lubbock landscape during fall, earthy tones like warm browns, mustard yellows, and deep greens can complement the scenery perfectly. For a summer session, consider light and airy fabrics in soft pastel shades. Adapting your outfits to the surroundings adds depth and harmony to your photos.

Add Layers and Texture

Adding layers and textures to your outfits can provide depth and interest in your family photos. Layers can be achieved by incorporating items such as cardigans, blazers, or jackets. Texture can be achieved with fabrics like lace, knitwear, denim, or chambray.

Let Your Personalities Show!

I think there is a pressure to dress yourself and your family in a way that you see on social media or on Pinterest, but I feel so strongly about avoiding that pressure!! I think there are ways to incorporate your personalities while still looking cohesive and put together! If your son hates wearing button downs, opt for a henley! Your daughter hates dresses? Let her rock a cute sweater and jeans! Don’t be afraid to not look “trendy”, in 20 years you’ll want to look back and see you and your family in a way that feels authentic to who you actually were and are!
